The short answer is: Because the nights in Greece are too warm, and we naturally refrain from chemical treatment – yet our oranges are ripe and full of flavor!
Most people believe that ripe and tasty oranges can be identified by an intense orange color. Often, after receiving their order, our customers are unsettled by the partially green or yellow peel and fear they have purchased unripe, sour-tasting fruits. But this concern is unfounded, as the color of the peel does not indicate the ripeness of citrus fruits.
Oranges ripen from the inside out and can be consumed as soon as the fruit sugar contained in them is in a balanced ratio to the fruit acid. This can also be the case with green peel, as the typical orange color only develops when night temperatures drop below 12 degrees Celsius. Since this only happens in Greece during the coldest part of winter, our oranges only develop a completely orange color in mid to late January. But even before then – when you can order sustainably grown Greek oranges from our online shop – the flavor is already fully developed.
But where does the assumption come from that ripe, high-quality oranges are characterized by a bright orange color? To prepare the fruits for sale on the European market and to meet consumer expectations, oranges (juice and table oranges) are usually treated with ethylene in ripening ovens at high humidity. While this process ensures degreening and thus a flawless color, it also leads to accelerated aging and thus a loss of taste. To make the fruit durable for sale, subsequent treatment with chemical wax – mixed with pesticides – is necessary, which is why the peel of these oranges, unlike our fruits, is not suitable for consumption.
